Trash Flame: A Bold, Unapologetic Display Font
Where It Demands Restraint
- Website navigation or paragraph text—readability collapses fast below 36px
- Long headlines (“Introducing Our New Sustainable Packaging Initiative”)—it exhausts the eye
- Anything requiring immediate trust cues (e.g., medical supplements, financial services, legal disclaimers)
- Lowercase body text—it wasn’t engineered for lowercase rhythm; stick to uppercase or title case for impact
Practical Designer Notes You’ll Actually Use
- Always test in black and white. Some display fonts rely on color tricks—Trash Flame holds up starkly, which means it’s structurally sound.
- Check small-size readability on actual devices. At 28px on mobile Safari, “X” and “K” start to merge. Stick to 36px minimum for web headers.
- Mock it up before committing. Drop Trash Flame into a real Canva template, a Cricut project preview, or a Shopify product page screenshot—not just desktop design software.
- Compare case treatments. Uppercase delivers maximum impact; title case works for short names (“Night Flame”); avoid all-lowercase—it fights the typeface’s natural voice.
- Review spacing—especially word spacing. Default tracking is tight. Loosen by +20–40 units in design tools for breath without losing edge.
- Test pairings deliberately. Beside a sturdy serif (Cormorant Garamond), it gains gravitas. Next to a friendly sans (Lato), it feels grounded. Against a script font? Only if the script is equally bold (e.g., Grandstander). Avoid pairing with other display fonts—visual competition kills clarity.
- Confirm commercial licensing. Trash Flame is a commercial font—verify usage rights cover your end use: client deliverables, digital products, printable design, merch resale. Some licenses exclude SaaS or app embedding.
